As a freelancer, you get asked a lot of questions on a daily basis. One of the most popular questions that seem to be asked is if you should list your prices on your website. If you look at an array of websites out there, you will find that some freelancers don’t list their prices directly on their website. For those people, you have to actually get on the phone with them or email them to find out what their pricing structure is, and to get more information.

When I was a freelance web designer and graphic designer, I didn’t have prices listed on my website. Why? Because I worked with so many different types of budgets it was hard to nail down a solid price. And honestly I loved the relationship building side of running a business so I loved connecting with other business owners even if they could not afford me. But this was not smart and I don’t want you to make the same mistake I did in my early freelancing years.
So let’s answer the infamous question because you are not alone in this mess of confusion. When it comes to listing your prices on your website, you should most definitely be sure to have them there. There are a few key reasons that you should have them there, but the list goes longer than the things I write in this post.
1 | INCONVENIENCE
It’s a pain and you know it. It’s a huge inconvenience to respond to each request when they more than likely won’t pay for your services if they aren’t a good fit. Before a potential client request lands in your inbox you want to weed them out a bit before they inquire about working with you. Pricing listed on the website is one of the ways to weed ’em out.
2 | CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
One of the most important things is the customer experience. The experience that a customer has can make or break your business, so it’s really important that you give them a good experience. If they have to go to ten different places to find you or have to put in too much effort, then you may completely lose out on a sale. You don’t want this to happen, so it’s easier to list the prices.
3 | YOUR TIME IS VALUABLE
Your time is money, and so you need to be sure that you are being smart with your time. If you are making them get on the phone with you to find out your price, and then they can’t afford it, then you just wasted your time and theirs.
It’s not a cool or fun process, that’s for sure. By listing your prices, you are ensuring that you are getting on the phone with people that are truly interested in hiring you.
4 | ATTRACT AND REPEL
Have you ever heard of the attract and repel philosophy? Not everyone is going to mesh with you. If you are a high-end graphic designer that knows her worth then your ideal client is NOT one who is looking for multiple coupons and a bargain deal on your services. You charge what your worth and you are going to repel people because of it. And that is okay. Honestly, it’s actually more than okay. It’s better that way!
By having those prices listed, you also will only be talking to ideal clients that can actually work with you. Like I mentioned in the last reason, it’s important that you only talk to people that can afford you. If they have no money to invest, then they just aren’t your ideal client. Keep in mind, a client is someone who pays you to do work. If they can’t pay you, they aren’t a client. Period.
So girl you need to have your prices listed on your website for many reasons, and it will ensure that things run more smoothly in your business. It’s hard on both you and a client when you have to schedule a call just to get a simple answer. So save yourself time and your clients by listing your prices on your website. Weed out those that don’t make the cut before you have to weed them out yourself.
